BREAD OF LIFE
One of my cousins had come down for summer vacation to our place along with her parents and grandparents. We had a bakery next door which the cousin used to frequent to watch the bakers make biscuits, puffs, breads and buns, and the occasional cake. She learnt how to prepare the dough, to roll them, to cut them and she would watch the bakers prepare the big oven and feed the trays for baking.
One day she attempted to make a biscuit, locally known as the khari biscuit. This is made by rolling the dough, applying ghee on the dough, folding and rolling again, then applying ghee and folding again and rolling. This is then cut into small rectangles and fed into the oven for baking. The end result is a fluffy crunchy biscuit. The cousin prepared about five of these and on being successful was rewarded a loaf of bread. All excited she came running home with the biscuit and the bread and jumped on her dad displaying her trophy. Her smiling dad exclaimed, “My daughter has indeed earned her BREAD OF LIFE!”
